Exploring the Ethics of Hospitality for Marriage Immigrant Women - the Close Reading of Seo Seong-ran’s Paprika -

Bang, Minhwa

Multiculturalism is already an established trend in South Korean society. Studying immigrant marriage must involve an extensive consideration of individual desire and economic demand. This study does not rule out a romantic perspective in investigating the marriage of Chuyen, the protagonist of Seo Seong-ran’s Paprika. Influenced by her romantic motive, Chuyen comes to marry a Korean man but fails to settle herself in the country of marriage. As a liminal being, caught between Korean and Vietnamese culture, she explains her difficulties only through non-verbal communication because of her limited linguistic capability, but her family immediately rejects it. No social membership is allowed for Chuyen due to the insurmountable threshold of mainstream society. The female immigrants in the boundary situation like Chuyen have a right to speak, but their expressions are vulnerable to being muted. In the same way, they are given a right to be welcomed but become othered instead. According to Levinas, the notion of subjectivity depends on one’s ethical relation with others, the relation he frames as “the face of the other.” In this regard, my paper pays attention to the “face” of female immigrants, systematically marginalized in mainstream society without any legitimate membership. Specifically, it calls for the necessity of appreciating their faces as a means of restoring their voice and identity, vulnerable to oblivion. The ethics of hospitality attempts to cure the precariousness of their subjectivity beyond the estimate of economic logic and the asymmetric relationship between the natives and the immigrants.
