“孔子問禮於老子”句에 나타난 司馬遷의 敍述視覺에 관한 몇 가지 검토
본고에서 필자는 “孔子問禮於老子”구의 의미를 「老子韓非列傳」과 그와 관련된 상관 문헌들을 중심으로 고찰하면서, 이 구절의 역사적 사실성의 문제와 함께 그 시빗거리가 제기된 근거 등을 살펴보고, 사마천이 굳이 넣은 서술시각이 무엇인지 밝혀보고자 한다. 필자는 사마천이 왜 둘의 만남을 거론하였는가 하는 점에 대해 논의의 시발점으로 삼았는데, 사마천의 사상적 일면이 도가 중심주의적 사고의 한 사례를 보여준다고 본다. 이는 “孔子問禮於老子”의 문제가 단순하게 공자가 노자에게 예를 물어보았다는 것이 아니라, 家系의 내력 및 『史記』를 관통하는 사마천의 사상과 관련된 복합적인 상관관계가 있는 사안임을 입증하는 문제인 동시에 사마천의 문학관 형성의 한 축을 형성할 수 있다고 보았기 때문이다. 물론 사마천이 추구하고자 한 것이 진정으로 儒道의 회통을 희망한 것인지는 확언할 수는 없다. 그러나 분명한 것은 이 구절을 통해 사마천은 유가와 도가 사이에 존재하는 공통 분모를 추출하려고 시도하였으며, 이러한 시도는 인간이 지향하는 삶의 방향이 방법은 달라도 그 길이 서로 통할 수 있다는 거시적 안목의 소유자이기 때문이다.
Review of Sima Qian’s Perspective in “Confucius Inquired of Lao Tzu about the Rites”
This study examines Sima Qian's “Confucius Inquired of Lao Tzu about the Rites” (孔子問禮於老子), part of Hanfei liezhuan (老子韓非列傳, Grouped Biographies of Master Lao and Han Fei) in the Shiji (史記, Records of the Historian) (104 BC) to understand Sima Qian’s ideological background in his writing. Previous studies on the record have doubted the historical accuracy regarding the encounter between Lao Tzu and Confucius and largely understood the record as an expression of Lao Tzu’s superior in the subject matter, the Rites, over Confucius. However, I argue that the record on the encounter between Lao Tzu and Confucius indicates Sima Qian’s Taoist writing perspective throughout the Records of the Historian with a Confucian perspective. Sima Qian recognized the marked similarities between Confucianism and Taoism, though it is still unclear whether he intended to unify the two concepts. The record on the Rites indicated Lao Tzu’s positive attitude toward Taoism and signified Sima Qian’s macroscopic appreciation that the proper way for people to live in the two ideologies are similar, even though the paths may different.
