This paper was written with the purpose of investigating and organizing the activities of one of Korea’s representative modernist poets from the 1930s, Kim Kirim, during his final years, based on various materials and testimonies. The term “final years” here refers to the time from when Kim became involved in left-wing groups and organizations after Korea’s independence, to the time of his abduction to North Korea during the Korean War and his eventual death. Aside from the records of this period, testimonial material which could confirm his activities can be broadly divided based on the following sources: (1) family and close friends, (2) his acquaintances from the literary world and the press, as well as acquaintances and his students from academia,(3) North Korean spies arrested in the South, South Korean personnel dispatched to the North, and defectors to the South, (4) parties involved with information agencies or the investigation of communist activities. As each of these types of testimonies have their respective advantages, disadvantages, and contradictions, a separate comparative evaluation is required for important points of contention. Accordingly, in this paper I further distinguish these testimonies into those which deal with (1) Kim’s left-wing activity and his entry into left-wing organizations after independence, (2) his activity in academia and lectures, (3) his activity directly before and after his abduction to North Korea, and (4) his activities within North Korea. Organizing this information will shed light on the activities and movement of Kim during this period, which hitherto had not been properly investigated, and, it is hoped, will contribute to a critical biography of Kim’s life in its entirety.
